2020 Hoosier Super Tour Points Championships — One to Go

2020 Hoosier Super Tour Points Championships -- One to Go

While the 2020 Hoosier Racing Tire SCCA® Super Tour’s eight-weekend, 16-race “regular” season is now complete, there exists one last chance for drivers to earn points toward the Hoosier Super Tour Nationwide Points Championship. That opportunity comes October 3-11 at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, during the SCCA National Championship Runoffs®, which is a points-earning opportunity for Hoosier Super Tour competitors.

To set the scene, let’s remember a driver’s best six Hoosier Super Tour performances are counted in the points total, plus their finish at the Runoffs. Race winners earn 25 points, and 21 points go to second. Points are then doled out to others starting with 18 and descending to a single point for the 20th finisher.

Many of the 26 different Hoosier Super Tour class championships are still being contested with 25 championship points still up for grabs. And let’s not forget the Hoosier Super Tour points championship is part of the criteria for drivers attempting to claim SCCA Road Racing Super Sweep honors bestowed upon the best of the best who manage a U.S. Majors Tour Conference Championship, a Hoosier SCCA Super Tour Nationwide Points Championship, and victory at the Runoffs all in the same car class.

But before we get ahead of ourselves, let’s look at just a few of the close Hoosier Super Tour points battles that will play out at the Runoffs. To start, there’s GT-Lite (GTL) where Graham Fuller, driving a Honda CRX, and Michael Lewis, in a Mazda RX-7, are tied with 100 points each. Taz Harvey and his Mazda MX-5 is a GTL championship longshot 23 points back.

In American Sedan (AS), Daniel Richardson and his Chevrolet Camaro enter the Runoffs with a two-point advantage on the Ford Mustang of defending AS national champion Gregory Eaton. Philip Smith is only 18 points off the lead in his Chevrolet Camaro. Two championship points also separate Prototype 1 combatants Darryl Shoff and Todd Vanacore, both piloting Elan DP-02 cars.

There’s a three-point spread in Formula F between the Mygale SJ13 of Dylan Christie and the Spectrum 14H of David Livingston. And only four points separates Joe Moser, driving a new-to-him Honda CRX SI, from Super Touring Lite (STL) defending national champion Danny Steyn and his Mazda MX-5 racecar. Moser took both STL wins during this year’s WeatherTech Chicago Region® June Sprints® at Road America, which perhaps could predict upcoming fortunes?

A few classes will see a hoard of Hoosier Super Tour championship contenders do battle at the Runoffs. In Formula Vee, defending Runoffs champion Andrew Whitston has amassed 132 Hoosier Super Tour points this year in his Protoform sled. But Stevan Davis and Chris Jennerjahn are only eight points behind in Vortechs, and the Protoform of Zachary Whitston remains in the chase, too. The Prototype 2 (P2) class will also be hot to trot as Armen Megregian and his Ligier JS 51 has a slim points lead over the Ligier JS 49 of Robert Iversen. Defending P2 Runoffs champion Tray Ayres, driving a Van Dieman ESR Mazda, is in reach of the points championship, as is Richard Colburn, in a Nostendo 1, and Tim Day Jr. who took a Saturday win earlier this year in his Stohr WF1 during the WeatherTech Chicago Region® June Sprints® at Road America.

Of course, there are many more exciting championship points battles occurring at the Runoffs. Below you’ll find a rundown of Hoosier Racing Tire SCCA Super Tour car classes and those drivers still fighting for Nationwide Points Championships at Road America during the 2020 Runoffs.
