At A Glance: '21 June Sprints Hoosier Super Tour

Normalcy has been a rare commodity around the globe for a while. But fans of SCCA Road Racing have been assured of one thing for the last 66 years, and that’s the WeatherTech Chicago Region® June Sprints® on the 4.048-mile, 14-turn Road America circuit in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin.

This year’s June Sprints, taking place June 4-6, begins on Friday at 8:10 a.m. Central Time with 25-minute practice sessions for each of eight competition groups, followed by 25-minute qualifying sessions to close out the day. Then on Saturday at 8:10 a.m. a second round of 15-minute qualifying begins for each run group before racing launches at 12:05 p.m. with 25-minute challenges until day’s end.

Sunday is all about competition with 13-lap races for seven of the race groups before the June Sprints concludes with a 15-lap race for Group 8 consisting of ground-pounding big bore cars.

Competition Cup Runneth Over

There are more than 360 entries across 28 different classes that will keep things sizzling at the June Sprints. What or who to watch? With stout fields throughout, and a slew of accomplished competitors mixed within, postulating a complete list of individuals to “keep an eye on” is simply ludicrous.

With 52 entries, Spec Miata will likely be the largest field of the weekend, followed closely by the 49 Spec Racer Ford Gen3 entrants. Both of those races will probably be more exciting than this year’s Oscars broadcast, so tell your friends to tune in to SCCA.com for a free serving of motorsports adrenaline.

At 19 entries, Formula Enterprises 2 is unlikely to disappoint considering the excitement that class produced during last year’s Runoffs at Road America. Formula Continental and GT-2 both have fields of 17 competitors and Prototype 2 has a 16-car field, so don’t sleep on those car classes.

Super Touring Lite, GT-1 and Touring 2 each boast 15-car fields, and a small touch off that car count is the 14-car B-Spec field.. Prototype 1, Touring 4 and Formula F comes in at a baker’s dozen, and 12 entries are expected in Formula 500 and Formula Vee.

Thanks to the Volunteers

If you’ve watched victory podium interviews at SCCA Road Racing’s Facebook page, you’ll know that winner after winner gives thanks to all the SCCA members who make each race weekend possible. With more than 160 volunteers on hand at the June Sprints, it’s appropriate to note that SCCA is a membership organization and, as such, relies on volunteers to put on events each and every weekend around the country. Be it Road Racing, Solo, Time Trials, RallyCross, RoadRally, HillClimbs, Track Events or anything else, it’s SCCA members who make it all possible.

Energetic and enthusiastic volunteers organize, register, score, officiate and work flag stations during race weekends. No event is possible without the help of selfless volunteers, so a great deal of “thanks” goes out to these people who come from all walks of life.
