This weekend at Pittsburgh International Race Complex, AKA “PittRace,” the normal excitement of an SCCA Summit Road Racing weekend will be enhanced with an “all things SCCA” approach—the inclusion of a wide variety of SCCA events in a single weekend, at a single facility. It’s an End of Summer Showcase Festival.
In addition to the Road Race hosted by Steel Cities Region, the event also offers:
“We wanted to do something really special involving as many of the SCCA programs as we could,” said Jon Krolewicz, Senior Manager of Time Trials and Track Events. “In our work with regions, we’ve been asking leaders to consider bolstering their events by broadening the offerings to things like Time Trials and Track Events, so when Steel Cities Region started exploring the opportunity to combine Time Trials with a road race, we knew we wanted to back up our suggestions.”
The logistics are aided by the PittRace facility which can run two road courses simultaneously, as well as having a paved 6-acre vehicle dynamics pad that serves as an autocross site for Steel Cities Region.
On Saturday the course will be split, and the Time Trials and Drivers school will run on the South Course while the Road Racers run on the North Course. Sunday, the two courses are combined so Time Trials drivers and Road Racers—including those who passed the previous days drivers school—will be able to participate on the full course.
The event—which is expected to attract more than 350 SCCA entries over the weekend and may act as a guide to the ever-changing expectations of what makes for a successful event weekend—does require some different planning and presents unique logistical challenges, but organizers are confident that the extra events can make the weekend a success.
“It’s been more work,” said race chair Bob Albert when describing the lead-up coordination and planning, “but we’re excited about pulling this off.”
National staff, including Krolewicz, will be on site at PittRace for the event—which has been called everything from a festival to a mega event—to support Steel Cities Region’s efforts.
“It’s exciting to see the different programs coming together in one place at the same time,” said Krolewicz. “We’re definitely looking forward to seeing how it pans out and how we can help other regions do the same.”
Registration is still open for all of this weekend’s events, and all are welcome.
