Saturday morning — December 11 — a series of strong storms and tornados devastated the area surrounding NCM Motorsports Park, causing heavy damage to track facilities.
Over the weekend, SCCA Time Trials program leaders and track staff spoke about the safety of the track staff, the damage, and the effect it may have on the 2022 Time Trials Nationals — scheduled for May 12–15. Most importantly, SCCA learned that track staff weathered the storms without significant injury, though some did sustain damage to homes, vehicles and property.
Matt Busby, General Manager of Track Operations at NCM Motorsports Park told SCCA that there does not appear to be any issues with the track itself and that the damage is limited to the support buildings. And while that damage is extensive, Busby — undaunted — plans to return to on-track activities in a matter of weeks, and reiterated NCM’s commitment to the 2022 SCCA Tire Rack Time Trials Nationals.
“We have been here before,” Busby said. “We operated events in our first year without permanent buildings, we know how to do it and we can do it again.
Heyward Wagner, Sr. Director of Experiential Programs offered SCCA’s commitment to keeping Time Trials Nationals at the track in 2022 in return.
“Our 10-year deal with NCM Motorsports Park to host TT Nats is a partnership,” Wagner said. “We are committed to keeping our date for 2022 and supporting our partner as they rebuild. We can work out of trailers, tents… whatever it takes.”
SCCA has also offered assistance in the efforts to rebuild NCM Motorsports Park facilities. Specifics will be worked out as cleanup gets underway, but the two organizations plan to work together to give SCCA members the opportunity to support the track and staff as they recover from the devastation.
