The legendary Nelson Ledges Road Course recently served as the epicenter of grassroots motorsports, hosting a jam-packed weekend of high-speed competition, professional race driver training, and precision time attacks. Jointly organized by Neohio and Steel Cities Regions of the SCCA, the blockbuster event brought together eager novices, stopwatch-chasing enthusiasts, and seasoned wheel-to-wheel racers for the ultimate celebration of horsepower and handling.
Alternative Drivers School: Building the Next Generation of Racers
The weekend kicked off with the SCCA Alternative Drivers School, an immersive training ground designed for aspiring racers looking to transition from track days to fully sanctioned competition.
Dual Divisional Road Race: Wheel-to-Wheel Drama
Once the students cleared the track, it was time for the veteran racers to take over during the highly anticipated Double Divisional Road Race. The grids were packed across a massive variety of SCCA classes, from lightweight Spec Miatas and open-wheel formula cars to high-horsepower grand touring machines. Because it was a dual-race format, drivers competed in separate, full-length points races across Saturday and Sunday. Spectators were treated to door-to-door passes and fierce battles as drivers fought for valuable regional and divisional championship points.
SCCA Time Trials: The Pure Pursuit of Speed
For those who prefer racing against the clock rather than fighting for position in traffic, the SCCA Time Trials provided the perfect outlet. The time attack format stripped away the stress of wheel-to-wheel crowding, allowing drivers a clean track to chase the perfect lap. Utilizing high-accuracy electronic transponders, times were tracked down to the thousandth of a second. The field was split by experience level—ranging from Intermediate to Advanced—ensuring that everyone had a safe, clear window of open track to push their machinery to the absolute absolute limit.
